I met with Abe Sylvia to talk about his new work, and found him to be as charming and lively as the characters he carefully crafts in his new film Dirty Girl.
What were you like as a teenager? Were you at all like Clark?
I’m similar in that I grew up in Oklahoma; I ate my feelings like Clarke did. I certainly felt alienated from the other kids, but I don’t necessarily feel like that’s anything new for a teenager to feel, I worshiped Melissa Manchester and I danced in my room, but beyond that, the rest is sort of a made up story. Definitely my point of view, and my impressions, of the people around me in Oklahoma at the time, all of that stuff is very personal. I had the greatest parents in the world, most accepting, most loving people.
So there was no dad trying to send you off to military school?
Oh God no, no no. My dad is a feminist!
Did you have a Danielle in your real life?
I think my life has been a series of Danielles. I think starting with this one girl in my junior high, “Dirty Debbie” who, I wasn’t friends with. I wasn’t brave enough to go up and say “Hi”, and she probably really could have used a friend. But she wasn’t coming up to me either – there you go, I wasn’t her cup of type of guy. I was always sort of struck by her freedom. Everybody remembers the dirty girl. Every high school has one. Whether you were friends with her or not you remember her name, she sticks with you. I think it’s because people are just discovering who they are as sexual beings and here’s this girl who already has it figured out. Whether she actually has or not is a different story, but that, I think, is why she’s iconic.
And through my life all of my primary great loving relationships – the best ones have been with iconoclastic women who broke the molds and have potty mouths and say what they feel. I love that about them and they love that I love that about them, and therein is our friendship. So that is what I wanted to do in that story of this friendship. That’s what I wanted to bring out.
You were able to do something in this film that many filmmakers are not successful doing and that is to be true to your characters while having hot button themes like teen sexuality, homosexuality, isolation, bullying without preaching or condescending to your audience. Can you talk about your approach to that?
The script was really organic. I wrote the script really quickly. I wrote it as a class project at UCLA, in 12 weeks. I didn’t do a whole heck of a lot of re-writing after I was finished. The flow was good; I think I was in a good place. I knew I could talk like Daniel – I knew I could talk like Clark, and I could just get them talking, and then you sort of say what are the themes in this funny dialogue and I thought how can I now underline that, how can all of these pieces become part of a whole.
The themes of parenting and what makes a family, a family isn’t just something you’re born into, it’s something that you find. That last shot of the movie with Milla Jovovich and Mary Steenburgen and she’s got that little girl in her lap and neither of those women is her mother and then you pull back and you see Juno on the floor and she talks about her father and it all just kind of happened sort of organically. I talked to Mary and Milla about this, they’re both mothers, and they say ‘gosh you never feel like you’re doing the right thing you do your best but you never feel like it’s right.’
I think if you say, “oh, I’m about to make a movie with a message” you’re screwing yourself. It just has to be characters you find interesting and funny and worth making a movie about. Get them talking to each other and see what you find. I think if you start with a political agenda you will end up with a PSA. I sort of learned that as an undergrad at theatre school. I had a professor that said “are you making art? Or are you making propaganda?” He dropped that into our brains.

Reality TV is not really real. I mean, I have no friends who've been stranded on an island or locked in a house (nor, as far as I know, has that happened to people who don't like me). In contrast, the movie, Courageous, truly reveals the reality of life. This highly entertaining film is about the struggles of fatherhood. Which of us guys hasn't struggled with the boundaries between work and home?
The story centers on a group of law enforcement officers and is filled with action, outstanding humor and at times, some tough emotional moments. At the show I attended, everyone cried. They cried at some tragic moments and at some moments of great relief. At my side was a good buddy who is a successful business pro and strong family man. He & I both walked away with some deeper awareness of how we could be better fathers to our kids and to our brides.
So there are also some distinct learning moments that makes this film much more than just an escape from reality. How often do you have an opportunity to take someone to a movie that has trailing impact on your life? I'll suggest you get some Dads together to watch Courageous and sit down for a meal afterward to talk about what it showed you were doing well, or right - and what you could be working on to better build into your family and their future. Powerfully-told story with an outstanding cast.

Take Shelter could be easily renamed to something like Anxieties of living in the 21st Century Western Country. It showcases a rich pallet of phobias, from fear of financial instability, job loss, to anxiety about upcoming environmental apocalypse. Curtis (flawlessly played by Michael Shannon) begins having dreams and visions of bad things happening to him and his family and so he decides to build a huge shelter in his backyard where they can all seek refuge in case any of his dreams were to come true. But following his instincts comes at a price – he loses his job, takes out unstable loan from a bank and destroys his deaf daughter's only chance to undergo a surgery to restore her hearing. The dreams drive Curtis into insanity as he mirrors his behaviour with what once happened to his mother, a victim of schizophrenia.
The moment Curtis admits to himself and to others that he might be going insane, the apocalypse does arrive and so everyone else is forced to agree that something bad was on its way all along. Take Shelter is a very contemporary drama, which would not have been made, let's say, ten years ago. The problems the film presents are mostly influenced by the recession, political divide in nowadays America and environmental problems caused by global warming. The director Jeff Nichols finds a perfect balance between building up the multitude of his main character's anxieties and presenting Curtis's struggle in a believable way. He escapes preaching about the presented issues and makes the sole existence of the problems uncertain up until the very last moment. What is most admirable though is that Nichols avoids religious aspects of his apocalypse and keeps it very close to life, making forces of nature the most vengeful and destructive.
Take Shelter was a rare jewel among the films presented at Sundance. It was beautifully executed (besides the outstanding performances from the cast, music and pictures are also note-worthy) and felt fresh and exciting.

If the screening that enraged you so was one of those previews where they hand out cards and have a focus group afterwards you should try to calm down because everything you've said is flat-out asinine. Neither preview was approved by the director, both previews were forced on the director, neither preview represented the movie Lonergan wanted to make and has now finally made, and unless you are familiar with both the script and all the takes in the hundreds of ours of footage, you haven't got the remotest idea whether or not editing can fix this or any screenings, which represented the actual progression of the work he wanted to do, then it's fair to say the movie is not your cup of tea and you will simply have to live with your befuddlement that other people don't all feel that way.
I'm angry! Why? Kenneth Lonergan, who is responsible for penciling and directing "You Can Count on Me", one of the best pictures of 2000, and helped us learn who Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo were, has created an indescribable, obliterating, terrible, torturous film. This film, in my opinion, is one of the worst films I've seen EVER.
Anna Paquin stars as Lisa Cohen, an upper middle class high school student who has way too much going on in her mind. The film starts off with "simple" Lisa in school, talking to people, doing normal teenager things when she finds herself on the search for a cowboy hat to wear to go horseback riding with her estranged father. As she goes to many different stores, she can't seem to find the right one or the most fashionable until she walks beside a bus and sees the bus driver (Mark Ruffalo) wearing a hat she likes. A few moments later an accident occurs involving a woman crossing the street (Allison Janney) and the blame, guilt, and despair all kick in at this point and it drags and drags for over THREE HOURS. This movie had the audacity to be that long. People walked out of the theater, groaned at the film, and while that was going on, I made self-inflicting wounds all over my body. That's how bad this film is.
There's randomness such as pornography, masturbation, Anna Paquin screaming, adultery, virginity losing, more Anna Paquin screaming, classroom debates, it goes on and on into the gateway called Hell. This was the biggest wannabe Magnolia meets Crash but rather was Showgirls meets Gigli. I hope every reader of this review sees the film because if I went through that excruciating pain, I want you all to feel it too. It's selfish but I can't comprehend how and why someone could watch that film and say "Wow! What a good movie!" Performances are weak, script is terrible, everything is just plain awful. This is out of contention and if critics like it then I give up. Over three hours is entirely way too long for a movie to make no sense and be that bad. Paquin better get back on the ball or just enjoy that Oscar she has and give up film making. Ruffalo is decent but writing brings him down greatly. Janney is brief but not too bad and the rest of the cast including Kieran Culkin, Matt Damon, and Matthew Broderick are all unnecessary and ill-mannered in this gutless tale of guilt, betrayal, and too many topics that you don't want to bring up because you just don't care to. Wait until you find out the meaning of the title, that's when the downward spiral happens into despair and self-loathing.
It was a pre-screening so they can do a lot of editing but nothing can save the film from where it was brought. "Margaret" is awful, point blank.

In a few short months, moviegoers will get to see Chris Evans fight the evil Red Skull in the big-budget franchise starter Captain America: First Avenger. Before he bursts into the superhero stratosphere, however, Evans has to fight some equally imposing foes in Puncture, a film about drug addiction and health care group purchasing organizations that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this week.
Based on a true story, Puncture stars Evans as Mike Weiss, a drug-addicted Houston personal injury lawyer, who — along with his partner Paul Danziger (Mark Kassen, pictured above on the right) — fought to get safe syringes into all U.S. hospitals to prevent health care workers from being stuck with infected needles.
The feature directorial debut of Mark and his brother Adam (producers on HBO’s Bernard and Doris), Puncture is a hybrid film — at once a harrowing tale of addiction and the crippling grip it can have on those in its throes, and a David vs. Goliath legal battle reminiscent of Michael Clayton. At the center of the film is Evans, in a far departure from his comic book work in The Losers and Fantastic Four. He makes Mike both sympathetic and infuriating — the type of guy who has his heart in the right place, but sabotages himself with every popped pill and crack-smoke inhale.
As of this writing, Puncture doesn’t have distribution, but following a well-received Tribeca Film Festival premiere on Thursday night, a timely subject matter and the burgeoning star power of Evans, expect that to change relatively soon. Movieline caught up with Evans and the Kassen brothers in midtown on Friday just before lunch to discuss Puncture, the importance of debuting the film at Tribeca, and just how Evans wound up starring as Mike Weiss. The one thing I was very surprised by was how recent the events Puncture is based on happened. You don’t really think of dirty needles in hospitals being a problem in the last 15 years — it’s shocking that the safety needles took so long to break through. Mark Kassen: That’s the thing — the breakthrough in medical science already happened. It’s the mechanism that’s broken in a way that the breakthrough — or something similar — can’t get to people who need it. People say there is not enough electric technology or solar technology or wind technology because it’s not cost-effective. This is not that problem. This is just that mechanism of distribution is broken. Was this something you were aware of before? How did you guys find this story — did Paul Danziger contact you? Adam Kassen: Paul sent us the script — Paul sent us a version of the script. Like you, we were surprised by that story. We hadn’t heard this either. Also, at a time — as it continues to be — where health care is at the forefront of the political arena, this was an interesting window on that debate. In particular, our parents are both front-line health care professionals, and in all the debate about health care you don’t really hear too much about those people. So, that connected to us on a personal level. And then the character that Chris played, Mike, was this amazing, brilliant, tragic hero. And we thought if we got the right actor — which we were lucky enough to get — it could be a really special movie.
We got Chris Lopata, who is a friend of ours — a writer we’ve been working with for a bunch of years, who’s great; we worked with him for about a year. We got it to a place where we really loved the script, and we sent it to Chris, and Chris was nice enough to take a meeting. And as we keep saying, we got him drunk, and… Chris Evans: I signed my life away! [Laughs] You took Puncture before being cast in Captain America. At the time, were you specifically looking for something more character-driven like this? CE: I think my team — my agents and managers — know the type of scripts that I like, the types of characters that I enjoy. My team sent me this and said, ‘You’re going to like this. We know you’re going to like this.’ I gave it a read, and I did. Within ten pages, I just loved the character — and then it turned out to be a great story. I was like, ‘This is awesome, I can’t believe this is in my ballpark. This is a possibility for me, no one is going to take this from me.’ I met with these guys, and at the end of the day you need good directors. If you don’t have good directors, it doesn’t matter how good the script or the character is. With them, I felt completely comfortable and confident, and I said, ‘This is great. I can’t believe these guys are foolish enough to just give me this movie.’ As a character, Mike is a departure for you. Are you going to try to do more of these types of roles going forward, perhaps to balance out being a major superhero like Captain America? CE: Yeah, of course! You gotta. The Captain America stuff is great, it’s fun. I actually do connect to the character; I love that character. But for me, the thing I struggle with on those films is the process. The way the film is made. It’s a very big movie, there’s a lot of waiting around. This film, we shot… 25 days?

As a thriller, "The Debt" performs many if not all the right moves. The suspense builds nicely, the twists come as surprises and its key characters are vivid enough. Where the John Madden-directed film gets into trouble is in wanting to deal with the Holocaust without being entirely a period film. About half of the story takes place in 1997, but if you do the math, its Dr. Mengele-like Nazi villain would be positively ancient. Indeed, the climatic sequence must take place in a hospital for dementia, which is not where you want a thriller to end up. It's almost funny.
How hard would it have been to move everything back a couple of decades to the late '70s, when Mengele figures last made appearances in such films as "Marathon Man" and "The Boys From Brazil"?
If one ignores this puzzling oversight, "Debt" has a new take on the subgenre of Nazi-hunter movies. With Helen Mirren top-billed, the Miramax film could do modest business in adult venues when the film opens Dec. 29 following festival debuts at Deauville and Toronto.
The film, scripted by Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goodman and Peter Straughan, is based on an Israeli movie, "Ha-Hov," little seen outside that country. From the synopsis of the original, it would appear this film has improved on plot elements to make the characters in their middle age more sympathetic if not downright tragic.
It's initially difficult to get your footing as the movie cuts back and forth from 1966 Berlin and 1997 Tel Aviv. But it's clear soon enough that the focus is on three Mossad agents who, during the Cold War, capture a war criminal (Jesper Christensen), a physician who performed horrific experiments in the camps. The trouble is he hid in East Berlin, so the agents must smuggle him and themselves into West Berlin in a tricky operation that requires split-second timing.
Rachel (Jessica Chastain), on her first operational assignment, and David (Sam Worthington) pretend to be a married couple with infertility problems in order to trap the physician, who practices gynecology. Stefan (Marton Csokas) pretty much runs the operation out of a dismal upstairs flat in a decaying part of the city.
The close quarters help foster a sexual triangle among the trio in which David, who has fallen for Rachel, is unable to make the first move, but Stefan is more than willing. All are deeply damaged individuals, Holocaust survivors painfully aware of their own families' tragedies in Nazi Germany.
Thirty-one years later, the three are considered heroes in Israel. Rachel (Mirren) married Stefan (Tom Wilkinson), and a daughter has just written a book about her parents' legendary exploit. David (Ciaran Hinds) disappeared years ago to travel widely. Then his sudden re-appearance coinciding with the book's publication triggers a crisis for all three. It seems they have all hidden certain facts about their heroic deed.
The film moves briskly but not so fast as that it doesn't carefully delineate its four main characters: the three Mossad agents and their captive. The agents live in a ghost world of absent relatives. Their mission isn't for country or honor; its a blood oath from the living to the dead. So when things go wrong, this isn't just a botched spy mission, it's a debt that must be paid off.
The war criminal also makes a fascinating study in evil. Once the veneer of his bedside manner slips away, he is unrepentant and cagey, knowing just which buttons to push to agitate his captives. It's a cat-and-mouse game where the cat and mouse change roles.
Location work in Tel Aviv and Budapest and studio interiors in London blend well. All aspects of the production shine as Ben Davis' cinematography makes excellent use of Jim Clay's sets, and Thomas Newman's score gooses the tension in the film's many suspenseful moments.
